What’s in a Number Anyway?

After the initial blunder of the incorrect announcement of Miss Universe 2015 pageant wherein Miss Colombia was incorrectly crowned as the next Miss Universe, one needs to stop and wonder.

For a moment, everybody else faded into the background. The spotlight was on Miss Colombia. And it took a few minutes more to have it turned  away from her. The host, Steve Harvey realized his error. Now, the spotlight was suddenly on Miss Philippines, Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach – the rightful owner of the crown as Miss Universe, 2015.

The lights faded and the crown hastily taken away from Miss Colombia – Ariadna Gutierrez, and placed on the pretty head of Miss Philippines. 

That’s it! 

Sometimes I wonder about these competitions. We all watched them with stars in the eyes, rooting for our own country. While, it is nice to have a winner and runner-ups, what happens to the rest? In India, winners, as well as contestants end up in Bollywood.

A friend (Dipti Sawaikar – Srivastava) rightly said to me when we were chatting over a cup of tea at her cute li’l home. Why is everyone focussed on the number one spot? Isn’t it unfair? Doesn’t everyone else work equally hard? This comes from a woman who always stood in the top 3 of my class. There was no stopping Dipti. And here she says something so relevant. Food for thought?

I had my viewpoint. A competition is a competition. But yes, this time round, a runner-up will be remembered compared to all runner-ups that have ever been. Don’t you think so?!!!! Maybe that was a blessing in disguise. Both are beautiful anyway! 🙂

As for the wrong announcement, perhaps it was a human error indeed. Let’s not target a person so much I guess.

Nevertheless, hope we take more notice of the people who make up the crowd because that is the only way a ‘Number 1 position’ will ever stand out. 🙂
