There was a time when a trip to the parlour was meant completely for destressing. This is the space to pamper yourself, as shown in the pretty flyer inserts that display the most exotic interiors and fancy treatments. Yet, over the years, my trips have visibly diminished. It’s not that I always had a trip to the parlours, but a relaxing session…once in a while helps to get rid of the stress created in today’s urban jungle.woman-316825_640

Strange as it may sound, I get stressed out in beauty parlours, particularly with the ones in Bangalore and Pune. No matter the brand and the Bollywood star that endorses it or the reputation of the local beauty parlour aunty, it’s the service that matters. And if you have someone frustrated attending to you….God Save You! In the rush to make more money, random women are hired to provide that relaxing facial that is going to burn a hole in your wallet. The short cuts taken by some parlours have left me disgusted and appalled at the kind of stuff that actually goes on.

Here are my observations –

  • The face massage that costs a bomb and lasts for an hour ends faster than it begins. Most of the time taken is for the face pack when the attendant happily applies it on your face and continues to SMS or chit-chat with her colleagues for a good 20 minutes.
  • Threading is something that is very easy. But I am sure, some of you might have come across some strange attendants who want to pluck out everything with a vengeance. It’s as if they are venting out their personal frustrations on your skin which reddens with the pain and tears keep rolling down on the cheek!
  • No matter the number of times you check the total to be paid for the services taken, the rate will always fluctuate at the counter. “Your hair is too long,” or, “You’ve got frizzy hair and hence it required extra shampoo!” The reasons given can range from the dumbest to the funniest to levy a heavy charge.
  • Hot wax containers are one of the most scariest things. Particularly when beauty parlours are small, and the crowd is beyond capacity. Ensure these are kept in an appropriate position when you opt for the waxing process.
  • Every haircut will be a designer haircut. Whether it costs you Rs. 150 or Rs. 3000. I just got a hair stylist who looked so uninspired that I thought it was his natural persona 😉 Well, it turns out that he was woken up from sleep and asked to report for work on a day off. People who run the parlours also need to think about the incentives for their employees. If they don’t perform well, why will a client visit it again?
  • “Madame, you are losing a lot of hair, you must opt for a spa treatment.” Yes…and load myself with more chemicals to feel better, smell better…and lose more hair in the bargain. Sigh! Try something new.
  • Hygiene is often compromised in many parlours. If you are planning on a manicure or a pedicure, do carry your own instruments. The hygiene levels are completely dependent on the person in charge. If he/she is true to the work, the place will be spick and span. 🙂
  • Most of the times, it’s better to D-I-Y the treatments at home. I know that not everything is possible but it’s always worth a try. More on this in the next blog!

What have your experiences been? I am keen to know!

I HAVE NEVER SEEN A BLOG POST SO RIGHT! I experience a few of these also and it just irritates me so much. I have thick eyebrows and they always complain that ‘it is too thick’ and tut in my face when they are doing them. I absolutely hate the negative energy they create by doing so. I mean, what am I supposed to do if I have thick eyebrows?! And when you pluck them, they complain that you pluck them. You can never win. It annoys me because it is like not agreeing to cut long hair into short hair just because there’s lots of it. Just get on with your job if someone is paying you! ah, sorry about that small rant :p

      Hi Bhavika
It is ok to rant because I have gone through the same problem. For threading….you can do it at home. Also keep a plucker at hand. These people don’t even know how to style curly or wavy hair. They insist on straightening it. Ridiculous! If possible, avoid many things in the parlour which you can do easily at home. Preferably go to a bigger chain because at least you can give a feedback whether positive or negative.

Can you do threading by yourself? Who will hold and stretch the eyebrow for you?
& yeah that’s true. I just can’t believe they give such bad service when we are paying them.

Yes, I can do. Tie the thread together into a tiny knot. Hold with both hands and twist it 4-5 times. You need to practice on your leg before you begin with your face!! 🙂 (Don’t go by the method shown in the parlours where they hold one end of the thread in the mouth)

Oh okay! I’ll try that. Thanks 🙂
