As I had mentioned in my earlier post on high-heeled footwear, it’s been a while since I have danced. While I love doing the Salsa, Cha Cha, and Rumba, I am not at a professional level at all! But that doesn’t stop me from appreciating the beautiful dance forms seen all around the world. On the occasion of World Dance Day, I take the liberty of listing down my favorite dance costumes that continue to mesmerize me. After all, fashion is in everything! The styling, the details, the colors, the fabrics…all these are so painstakingly thought of and worked upon. One can see tremendous hard work and dedication.
I have not been able to include all the dance forms and costumes (but obviously!). These are some that top my list!
Gorgeous Dance Costume (above) from Bali. I love the accessories here and have been fascinated with Bali after reading ‘Eat, Pray, Love’ and the beauty of Bali seen in the film.
Haven’t you always wanted to tip-toe like this pretty ballerina? I love their dance styles and, of course, the pretty costumes!
Elegant ballerinas (above) at their best. They look so pretty and quite like perfect dolls!
Check out the beauty of Ballroom dancing. So romantic!
Back home, we have many classical Indian dances. In Bangalore, the institute named Nrityagram is a hub for disciplines who stay and learn together in a traditional Gurukul style.
This image is a Kuchipudi dance style (above). Don’t you love the elaborate costume and makeup?
Dance drama presented by a Kathakali dancer. The dancers take hours to prepare for the show and they have a gamut of expressions on display!
And now, here are some snapshots of my sister – Sampada Pillai (photos below). She is a trained Kathak dancer and runs her own dance school in Bangalore. This style is often confused with Kathakali dance due to the name.
Costumes are based on the traditional style followed by all Kathak dancers. Here, she is photographed while presenting various scenes from her dance performance.
Do let me know your favorite dance styles and costumes! Would love to hear from you….
